- My law practice has included individual and business clients with civil, criminal, domestic/family, administrative, employment, and immigration cases. I have represented clients before federal, state, and local courts. Over the course of my professional life, I have been the president of successful start-up business enterprises and have held teaching positions on undergraduate and graduate faculties. In recent years, I have limited my law practice to cases involving immigration law. I was born in Virginia but have lived, studied and worked in eight States and in Germany, Switzerland and Mexico. I earned a bachelor's degree and three graduate degrees, including a doctorate from the University of Heidelberg in Germany. This broad experience underlies my commitment to the international community in America. It is part of the reason why I insist on thinking and speaking of this community as people, persons - not "aliens" or "foreigners."

As we try to get a handle on the flow of people into this country, we must bear in mind the tremendous amount of intelligence, energy, independence, and ambition that people who come to the US bring. The success of the US has been in attracting people from all over the world who strive to be more and do better. It is easy to focus on the bad apples in the barrel and lose sight of all the good apples that come with them. If we make policy focused solely on keeping the bad apples out, we will deprive our country of the new ideas, ambitions, and energies that immigrants bring with them.
